Goal Reset

Updated: May 4, 2022

This past week I have started a reset course. It is to reset your plans and goals for the future. It has been very interesting and has caused me to change how I’m thinking about things. I still have the same goals but we are digging into the “why” behind the goals and how I’m feeling about them.

The reset course is being put on by Mel Robbins. It is a three part course, entirely free. You download a workbook and fill it out as you’re watching the videos. Each video is about 25 minutes long. Mel is a well-known author. She wrote “The 5 Second Rule” which I recently downloaded and plan to read. Apparently your alarm goes off, you count to 5 and get up. The 5 second rule. I’m going to try this and see if it works this week. I will give you a recap once I’ve read the book.

The first part of the course is to ask yourself how you really feel when it comes to life and goals. I’m feeling stagnant, stuck and unfulfilled. Like a hamster running on a wheel getting nowhere. To dig deeper you look at four key areas of your life.

1. Health and Wellness

2. Work, Career or Business

3. Relationships and Love

4. Fun and Happiness

You then look at a gas tank and figure how you are feeling in each category. Is your tank full and you feel energized in the category? Are you three quarters full and good with yourself? Are you on half a tank meaning fine? Quarter tank you are just “meh” and empty is depleted.

I’m not going to get into all my answers but I am definitely “meh,” quarter tank, on Health and Wellness. I mean, I am healthy. I don’t have any major health related issues. My cholesterol is a little high but overall I’m good. But, I’m 70lbs overweight and all those undesirable health issues are bound to arise. Not to mention I can’t bend over and tie my shoes without being totally winded from squishing myself to get to my feet. Then there is the kneeling on the floor and needing a crane to get me back up.

Once you figure out where you are on the gas gauge, you describe to yourself how you want to see yourself. I want to weigh 150lbs. I want to have more energy. Iwant to be able to bend over and get off the floor. I want to be flexible.

Part two requires you to think about all the little things you do on a daily basis and if you keep doing them how will your life look in the future. The truth is, if you keep doing all the little things you’ve been doing right along, you will stay the same. Nothing will change.

So, the little things, where I come home from Kohl’s at night and have a bowl of cereal. Or, come home from Cornell and sit in my chair and spend an hour on Facebook and Instagram are going to keep me in the same situation. I will continue to be overweight, achy and miserable.

Keeping in mind what these little things are that have you stuck, take a look at someone you know who epitomizes what you want your life to look like in Health and Wellness. I look at my coworker Mindy. She always gets up in the morning and doesn’t hit snooze. She exercises nearly every day. She eats better than I do and she doesn’t sit down when she gets home from work.

What little thing can I do to change the course of my day and improve my Health and Wellness? I can get up in the morning and not hit snooze. I can take the dog for a walk when I get home so I don’t sit down. I’m going to focus on these two things and see if it doesn’t provide me with some extra energy.

You need to start with simple systems to get you moving in the right direction. And it is the little things that are going to get you there. It is easier to think of eating a frog one bite at a time rather than trying to swallow the whole frog. Progress is working toward something, not trying to complete the task in a day. It won’t stick that way. Little steps.

Lastly, it is vitally important to have support. Change is not easy. But if you have someone in your corner cheering you on, you are much more likely to continue working toward bettering yourself. They help hold you accountable.

Get out a notebook and try this exercise. Look up Mel Robbins and see if she has something to offer you. I have found this reset to be exactly what I need. I hope to make some real progress in the future. I hope you join me and if you need a cheerleader let me know. I will be there for you. Live life to its fullest!
