So, last week I planned to tackle the dreaded C words. Craft room Clean up. As you can see, I have accumulated a lot of clutter since the start of COVID. I have fabric and scraps laying around from making masks, hand towels laying around from making my dad crochet top towels, and paper everywhere from making papercrafts. An absolute mess.
As with any overwhelming cleaning task the best bet is to pick one area and get started. So, I started with all my planner stuff laying on the floor in front of the door. I can’t believe how many planners I have and some of them never used. Found a 2020 Happy Planner completely empty. Oops. Not sure what I did in 2020 to keep myself organized. Probably used the Living Well Planner, another one of my favorites. Its just limited on decorating space so I gravitated back to the Happy Planner.
I moved to the ironing board which housed all the fabric scraps from making masks. I threw out what was too small. Which is a big feat for me. I keep everything. Just in case. Fabric scraps are never too small especially for foundation piecing (quilting).
I then moved on to the table top and cleaned off all the paper scraps. Organized my planner supplies (50 sticker books and accessories). And then, I tackled all the paper on the floor. I didn’t know I had accumulated so much paper. There are books of decorative paper, paper I have coffee stained, old books I steal pages from. Old sheet music.
It was a catastrophic mess. But after several hours of cleaning it is in much better shape. I can actually walk into the craft room and I’m not worried about the pets coming in and stepping on things. Now I need to use the craft room as it was designed for and make things.
So, when you have a large cleaning job it is best to just start in one area. Take frequent, short, breaks. And get right back into it. I know it is overwhelming but you can do it. My craft room still isn’t perfect but it is 100% better then it was and I’m able to find supplies again. I still have to figure out a cutting area for quilting. My table is covered in paper and planning craft stuff so I may need to find a small desk or table to add to the room for my cutting mat.
The key to having a clean craft room is to keep it picked up. It is easy to be in the middle of a project and leave everything out. But you must put stuff away as you use it in order to keep the chaos down. This is especially important if you have a multi-use room like I do. There is nothing more defeating then wanting to quilt but you can’t cut anything because the paper and planning supplies are all over the table.
Fight your overwhelm and jump in and start your cleaning project. It feels so good when you are finished. Even if you only do one area a night. You will get it done. 1% accomplished is better then 0%. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Take it one area at a time, one day at a time, one hour at a time. Celebrate your accomplishments. You are worth it. Live life to its fullest.
